How Do Our Emotions Affect Our Physical Health?

As already noted in this website, EFT works on anything requiring the removal of emotional ‘blocks’. This includes many physical conditions and illnesses.

In his work, Bruce Lipton MD, cellular biologist, explains what he describes as ‘the blueprint of health’. He states that about 5% of the world’s population has birth defects that arrived from mutated gene codes producing dysfunctional proteins.  The deformed or defective proteins can disrupt the normal pathway functions.  The remaining 95% of the population arrive on the planet with a “perfectly functional set of gene blueprints”.  So what happens?

Lipton explains:-Sometimes, the body’s natural harmony breaks down, and we experience dis-ease which is a reflection of the body’s inability to maintain normal control of its ‘function-providing systems’. Because behavior is created through the interaction of proteins with their complementary signals, there are really only two sources of dis-ease: either the proteins are defective or the signals are distorted.

He identifies that in the absence of birth defect (a normal health genetic blueprint), there are other factors creating illness caused by defective proteins and distorted signals.  These are:-

  • a) Trauma-. An injury to an area such as the spine causing a physical impediment to the transmission of the nervous system’s signals may result in “a distortion of the information being exchanged between the brain and the body’s cells, tissues, and organs”.

  • b) Toxicity-   Toxins and poisons in our bodies disrupt our appropriate chemistry which can lead to an alteration of the signaled information while on its pathway between the nervous system and the ‘targeted cells and tissues’.

  • c) Thought and the actions of the mind- Lipton believes the mind to be the most important influence on the ‘dis-ease’ process; that mind-related illnesses do not require that there be anything physically wrong with the body at the outset of the dis-ease.

Lipton further identifies that-: altered signals, derived from either of these causes, can inhibit or modify normal behaviors and lead to the expression of dis-ease.

He states: “Health is predicated upon the nervous system’s ability to accurately perceive

environmental information and selectively engage appropriate, life-sustaining behaviors. If a mind misinterprets environmental signals and generates an inappropriate response, survival is threatened because the body’s behaviors become out of synch with the environment. We may not think that a thought could be enough to undermine an entire system, but, in fact, misperceptions can be lethal”.

In his work and whilst studying alternative healing modalities, Eric Robins, a U.S. urologist, recognized that there are better ways to treat chronic problems with body function than what is traditionally learned in medical school.

He saw a common component within several different healing methodologies.  The common approach and understanding being that the body has a tendency to heal itself and that there is a ‘healing energy that flows through the body’ allowing this to happen.  The thought is that if there is a block to the flow of this healing energy with stagnant or depleted energy, the body is predisposed to illness. The practice of these healing methods is to re-establish the flow.

Robins explored the long term effects of unresolved trauma on the body. In order to prevent these stressful and emotion-laden memories from surfacing to conscious awareness, the body is said to ‘clamp down internally’. In so doing, the stress and emotions are often stored as tension in the smooth and skeletal muscles of the body, rather than ‘in the head’. Smooth (involuntary muscles) are those that function without our conscious control.  Examples of this may be: emotional trauma that is ‘stored’ in the smooth muscle of the lungs as in asthma or in the intestinal tract causing irritable bowel syndrome.

He is quoted to have said to his patients that if they were consciously aware of their stress or emotions, they wouldn’t have the disease.

It is Robins’ belief that “the presence of disease presupposes the existence of the emotional issues stored in the body. Our well buried traumatic memories prevent the flow of natural healing energy (remembering the body is largely a self-healing machine)”.

Along with his mainstream medical procedures, Dr.Robins uses EFT to treat many different medical conditions including cancer, diabetes, hearing or vision loss. He regularly travels to Australia to share his knowledge at seminars. He is well worth listening to.

If you are under the care of a medical practitioner it is advisable to consult with the practitioner before considering substituting any existing medical management with EFT.

EFT is a wonderful adjunct to existing therapy and also as a ‘stand-alone’ modality.
